Tombstone Tuesday: Louis and Gertrude Chorny, Montefiore Cemetery, NY

During the last couple of weeks we've been documenting gravestones of the Charny family of Labun: parents Abraham and Chasi; and son Nathan and his wife Yetta. I'm not quite sure why this occurs - or why it sticks, but the Charny family, like a few others with which I am familiar, adopted different spellings of their surname when they established themselves in the United States. Louis Chorny was another of Abraham and Chasi's children. Yet he consistently chose to spell his surname Chorny and codified that upon naturalization in 1942.[1]

Louis married native New Yorker Gertrude Rubin on 27 March 1927.[4]
